Another great find in Portland, Maine! This time it’s not only a place to grab a bite to eat but also a spot to take the kids for an afternoon of fun! Areas for climbing, painting, legos, trains and even a a stage are just a few of the things to keep kids occupied. The reason I’m reviewing the GreenLight Cafe is for their extensive healthy menu which, of course, includes gluten-free items!

Delicious muffins, breads and other sweets are provided from a local dedicated gluten-free bakery. Some of these are also dairy-free (call to inquire as items vary). The bread can be used for the panini’s and naturally gluten-free organic salads and fruit smoothies are also on the menu. You don’t have to have children to enjoy in this healthy cuisine- all are welcome!

Classes for adults and children are available. Some of these include yoga, sign language and dance classes.

Stop by for an organic coffee and bring your computer- they have WiFi!

Kinnikinnick Rice Bread is used for the sandwiches and breakfast toast and it’s gluten, dairy and soy-free (contains eggs and corn). Eight signature omelets are available or, if you prefer, you can choose to build your own. Only organic, free range eggs are used. There are also many “Combination” dishes and I’m glad to see many of them include broccoli and greens!

Aside from Daily Specials, the only entrees listed on the menu are two salmon dishes, however, these are not served on Saturday or Sunday. Call ahead to find out the Daily Special and stop by soon to enjoy a refreshing smoothie or milkshake which are back on the menu for the summer season!

Sylvester’s Restaurant is part of the Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture and locally sources many of their ingredients.

The potato and sweet potato “fries” are actually baked and are gluten-free. They are hand-cut on-site and coated with olive oil and baked till crispy. Salad and seasonal vegetables are available too and are sourced from local, organic growers. Even the milkshakes are made with your choice of locally made ice cream or non-fat yogurt. Fruit shakes (contain dairy) are offered as well.

We had a fun experience at this casual, family-friendly burger joint and appreciated the quick service and the fact that the kitchen is open to viewing so we could see the server change his gloves when preparing our order. We’ll definitely be back!

The menu lists pizza topping choices of vegetables, pineapple and also specialty toppings such as pepperoni and apple sage sausage (both vegan, of course), as well as artichoke hearts and portobello mushrooms, to name a few. A choice of Vegan Gourmet Cheese Alternative (contains soy) or soy-free, tapioca/arrowroot based Daiya cheese is available to top off your pizza. The Diaya cheese is also available for purchase in half pound increments. Desserts are baked in-house and vary, but Liz Lovely’s gluten and dairy-free cookies are always available!

A restaurant that serves gluten-free, dairy-free pizza with dairy-free cheese is a rare find. Let’s hope they expand the gluten-free pizza crust availabilty to include more days of the week!

At Veggie Planet all menu items are vegetarian, almost all can be made vegan, and many are gluten-free! Located in Harvard Square, they are proud members of Cambridge Local First which enables them to network and procure supplies from other local businesses. There is not a specific gluten-free menu but I was told that the entrees are gluten-free (over 10 to choose from!) and can be served with brown or coconut rice (the pizza crust option is NOT gluten-free). I’d love to try the Henry’s Lunch/Dinner which is a mixture of roasted butternut squash, carmelized onions, rosemary and sage, goat cheese and asiago cheese. Any item can be made vegan (dairy-free) by switching out the cheese for Teese brand soy cheese or their homemade tofu-basil mash. The salads are also gluten-free as well as all of the dressings. Vanilla, mint-chip or soy vanilla ice cream is available for dessert. After 5 pm “smaller bites” are available such as the gluten-free Seasonal Crudite which is an assortment of seasonal raw vegetables served with a choice of dips. Wine (the beer is NOT gluten-free) is offered evenings and weekends and each night the restaurant is transformed into Club Passim with live entertainment!
