About Us
Dining away from home can be a challenge for those managing food allergies and intolerances or special dietary needs. As a registered dietitian, as well as a mother of children with food allergies, I am always on the lookout for a safe place to eat. This site came about due to the necessity of finding restaurants receptive to serving customers with food allergies and special dietary concerns. Our goal is to increase the awareness within the restaurant community so that we may once again experience the freedom to dine away from home.

Dave’s BBQ

Dave’s Ribs Hickory Smoked BBQ in Harwich, Ma, offers smoked fish plates which are listed on the menu as gluten and dairy free.  After contacting Dave, I discovered that most of his menu is gluten and dairy-free.  This includes all of the sauces and rubs.  He doesn’t use thickeners of any kind.  He has been a chef for over 50 years and takes pride in using natural ingredients and believes in the slow cooking process to enhance sauce flavor and to let thickening  occur naturally.  Sides of beans, oven roasted potatoes and German potato salad are gluten and dairy-free, however, the cole slaw is gluten-free only.  He kindly offers tastings for those who want to sample menu items.

Wow! Gluten free fried clams, chowder and more…

Clams,scallops & fries

Woodman’s of Essex  is a well loved  establishment that has been frying up clams since 1914  and most of their menu just happens to be gluten-free!  There are many choices and the portions are generous.  Fried clams, scallops, haddock, chicken fingers, clam chowder and fries are a few of the gluten-free menu choices available.

Check out their gluten-free menu for the full listing.  All breaded items are  prepared with ground corn meal, no other flour is used. But note, the food is dipped in evaporated milk before being coated.  Be sure to tell the cashier that your order is gluten-free so they can use clean utensils.

It is a casual  fun place to visit in any season.  In warmer months diners can sit outside on picnic  benches over looking the Essex River.  For many, it just wouldn’t be summer without a trip to Woodman’s.

Update:  Woodman’s Restaurant has opened another location in Litchfield, NH. They can be found in the Mel’s Funway Complex and have the same delicious gluten-free items and, I’m told, when not busy they will make you gluten-free onion rings!
