About Us
Dining away from home can be a challenge for those managing food allergies and intolerances or special dietary needs. As a registered dietitian, as well as a mother of children with food allergies, I am always on the lookout for a safe place to eat. This site came about due to the necessity of finding restaurants receptive to serving customers with food allergies and special dietary concerns. Our goal is to increase the awareness within the restaurant community so that we may once again experience the freedom to dine away from home.

Celery Stick Cafe in Concord

The Celery Stick Cafe, located within the Concord Food Coop, is always serving up something healthy, hot and delicious.  It is the place to go for lunch, especially if you need to eat gluten and/or dairy-free.  Open 7 days a week, the menu changes daily but the staff will gladly work with you to accomodate your specific needs!

The black bean and sweet potato enchillada is just one of the many gluten-free dishes and it is vegetarian too.  By skipping the cheese you can make it completely vegan.  The vegan chili is a popular option during the frigid winter months.  Gluten-free soups, granola bars and cookies are available daily.

In the warmer months, be sure to take advantage of the outdoor cafe seating.

I used to work at the Celery Stick Cafe. Be very carefull trusting the gluten free label here. Many of our Celiac customer’s would get flare ups as we are a small kitchen with a non gluten free bakery inside and this is not a “clean” kitchen for those of us that are trully gluten intolerant. The local nutrionist calls our kitchen a “sick” kitchen and tells her clients not to eat here. I left because I didn’t like lying to customers just so we could make a buck.

In response to the previous comment: the Co-op does not operate a gluten-free kitchen, nor do we claim to. Just the opposite: we have had posted in our cafe (in several places) the folowing notice on bright orange paper:

    IMPORTANT ALLERGY INFORMATION
Products from our café labeled as gluten-free are made from ingredients without gluten. Every effort is made to reduce the risk of cross-contamination however items labeled as gluten-free may contain trace amounts of gluten as they are produced in a kitchen on shared equipment with other products containing gluten. To ensure your item are 100% gluten-free please consider purchasing commercially packaged products.
