Authentic Mexican cuisine can be found at La Siesta in Winthrop center where the Mexican- born proprietor has so wisely included a gluten-free menu!
This quaint, festively decorated restaurant features corn tortillas on much of the gluten-free menu. These are served as tacos, fajitas and enchiladas, which are paired with a variety of fillings including vegetables, shredded chicken, beef, pork or fish. Other entrees include sauteed shrimp, tilapia and sea scallop dishes. All are served on a bed of rice.
After being seated, we were presented with complementary warm tortilla chips and a bowl of aromatic, fresh salsa. But, sadly discovered that they were off limits for those of us needing gluten-free because the chips were cooked in a shared fryer. Oh well, on to the entree! For this, we orderd the Veggie Enchiladas. These were generously filled with portabella mushrooms and lightly sauteed spinach and topped with tomatillo sauce and mozzarella cheese. Sides included rice and beans. For dessert, there is usually some variety of flan offered but be sure to look into the daily specials which may include more entree and dessert options as well.
