About Us
Dining away from home can be a challenge for those managing food allergies and intolerances or special dietary needs. As a registered dietitian, as well as a mother of children with food allergies, I am always on the lookout for a safe place to eat. This site came about due to the necessity of finding restaurants receptive to serving customers with food allergies and special dietary concerns. Our goal is to increase the awareness within the restaurant community so that we may once again experience the freedom to dine away from home.

Sam Diego’s Mexican Cookery & Bar

Sam Diego’s has a gluten-free menu!  It is currently only available in the restaurant but they do make mention of it on their website under “FAQ’s”.  On our most recent visit we were pleasantly surprised with the availablity of complimentary gluten-free tortilla chips and salsa.  This is something relatively new and the gluten-free menu has not yet been revised to reflect this change as it still states that the tortilla chips are “off limits” because they are cooked in a shared fryer.  I was given my own basket of chips (more of  a healthier baked-type vs. fried) and the server reminded my dining partners not to dip into my salsa bowl with their chips!  She was also great about asking if any of us had any other food restrictions before taking our order.

Here is a run down of the gluten-free menu:

The appetizers on the gluten-free menu were  Habanero Chicken Wings, Baby Back Ribs and Chile Con Carne.  For entrees, there was the Chicken Fajitas served with corn tortillas and spanish rice, a New York sirloin called the Drunken Matador which came with a cheese and onion enchillada, the Classic Quesadilla, Enchilladas, a Rib Dinner which consisted of ribs, cole slaw and steamed vegetables, and the BBQ Pork Quesadilla, which I selected.  This was a very flavorful and satisfying dish of slow roasted BBQ pork, with jack and cheddar cheeses sandwiched between corn tortillas.  It also included a side of cole slaw (dairy-free but contained mayo-eggs).   Entrees are made to order so modifications are possible.  Flan was the gluten-free dessert option. Sam Diego’s has two convenient locations. One in the heart of downtown Plymouth and the other on Cape Cod in Hyannis.
