In addition, the standard menu includes other items that are gluten-free. These are marked with an asterisk.

There is quite a selection of signature sandwiches from which to choose as well as entrees and appetizers, including Clam Chowder. Make sure you avoid the fries as they have a flour coating. Dessert is available too!

Well I know where I am booking my vacation next summer! It has to be Hampton Beach just so that I can be a frequent visitor of Buzz’s Bakery & Take-Out Cafe just 5 minutes up the road (77 Lafayette Road, Route 1) in North Hampton, NH. This dedicated gluten-free bakery offers an incredible assortment of sweets as well as savories. Its founder, Steve “Buzz” Scaturro has celiac disease himself and seems to know just what foods we miss the most.

His pastry selection varies but on any given day you may find cookies, muffins, danish, scones, coffee cakes, cinnamon rolls, brownie pie and even granola! (Note-gluten containing items are sold here too but brought in from an outside vendor) Many of the gluten-free products are also dairy-free such as the brownies, pizza crusts and breads as well as some of the muffins (some are brushed with melted butter before baking). In addition, prepared soups and dinners are available for purchase. These also vary but some include pulled pork, meatloaf and chicken parmesan. The homemade parmesan breadcrumbs do contain dairy due to the use of Romano cheese, but this can be special ordered ahead of time and Steve will make it dairy-free for you.

There is such a “buzz” over Steve’s delicious breads that he is formulating dry mixes to sell so more people can partake in these gratifying breads. His foods are also sold seasonally at New Hampshire farmers’ markets in Durham, Exeter, Rye, Hampton and Portsmouth.

Many of these are allergen-friendly, or can be modified to be so. The delightfully vegan appetizer, Grilled Vegetables on a Skewer, consists of fresh summer squash and zucchini, bell peppers, spanish onions, cherry tomatoes and mushrooms which are baked until tender and sweet. On the entree portion of the gluten-free menu is the signature dish Old Salt Chicken which can become dairy-free by omitting the melted mozzarella cheese. You’ll still be left with a delicious baked boneless breast of chicken that is covered with plum tomatoes, black olives, Bermuda onions and artichoke hearts. There are also many steak and seafood dishes from which to choose (watch out if you have to avoid fish or shellfish). Early Bird three-course dinners are available Monday through Friday from 3-5 pm for an unbelievable price of $12.99!
