After learning that Jason Carron, formerly of the food allergy-friendly Fleming’s Steakhouse , was the executive chef of the Sea Dog Brew Pub, we knew a visit was in order. Upon arriving, we were happily surprised to find a full gluten-free menu ( not available online)! This menu (click on picture to expand) includes appetizers (mostly salads), a variety of entrees ranging from steak, pork chops and baked haddock to pasta dishes that are available with sides such as asparagus, mashed potato, red bliss potatoes, fries, peas, broccoli and mushroom risotto. Burgers (with buns!) and pizza (crust is dairy-free) are also options. Dessert is not posted on this menu, but on the night of our visit, they were serving a gluten-free brownie sundae.

We enjoyed the Spinach Salad (contained walnuts) and Chicken Margherita Pizza which ,obviously, contained grilled chicken, tomato sauce and was topped with shredded cheddar jack cheese. Another dish tried was the Grilled Chicken Pasta. This chicken was served over a bed of gluten-free penne, tomatoes and broccoli and was finished with a rum cream sauce. They did a great job cooking the pasta and were also concious of contamination by having management deliver our ‘special’ food. You may notice the chicken is lacking in the picture of the pasta dish above. Though our server seemed embarrassed that the dish had a missing component, I didn’t mind at all when I discovered that it was specially and separately prepared from the regular grilled chicken and, thus, arrived on a separate plate.

Oddly, they do NOT offer gluten-free beer!

Besides the Woburn location, there is the Sea Dog Brew Pub in Hull, Ma. It has a similar (if not identical) gluten-free menu. However, the gluten-free options vary at the Maine locations. For instance, the Bangor location provides a list of substitutions when needing gluten-free, such as trading pasta for rice. They do not currently have gluten-free buns, pasta or pizza (yet)…

Be sure to check out the fun events!

Did you know The Maine Diner offers gluten-free bread! Wow! And, apparently, it has been for some time now. I shudder to think of all the times I had to depart early from vacation stays with relatives while they went to enjoy this iconic Wells, Maine restaurant. We always chose to part ways because the limitations in such a restaurant were not something I wanted to subject the little ones to.

This bread (contains dairy, eggs, corn starch, potato & yeast) is available for breakfast or with any of the other menu items. There is no gluten-free menu, however, I am told there are numerous items that are gluten-free. ! If you’ve missed Lobster Salad, (or a lobster roll) you can indulge once again with this farmhouse white bread. Also, there are many sandwiches that are gluten-free and a few of the Seafood Sandwiches are also available with this bread. These include the Grilled Yellow Fin Tuna Sandwich, Maine Crabmeat Roll and the Dale Arnold (warmed lobster meat sandwich served with butter for dipping). Our server was helpful going back and forth with questions to the kitchen, but a gluten-free menu would have made the exerience so much easier for all involved!

I must alert you that there is no dedicated toaster and no guarantee that the grill will be thoroughly cleaned for your gluten-free items, especially during busy hours, which seems to be often. So plan your sandwich choice accordingly. On our visit, we had to forgo the grilling/toasting which led to a disappointing, crumbly sandwich and had me longing for Udi bread!!

Silly’s in Portland, ME is very concious of the dairy-free, gluten-free and vegan needs of their customers and clearly mark these choices on their menu . Appetizers, entrees, salads, burgers & wraps (available on brown rice tortilla) and desserts are featured.

Pizza is also served here. The gluten-free ”pizza” is made from a chickpea flour/flax seed mixture and is know as a Bonzo Cake. How silly! To keep it vegan, a veggie-soy cheese is available for topping.

There is a dedicated fryer for the gluten-free items (unfortunately, not so for vegan items) so the fries, sweet potato fries, plantains and fried tofu are a go! The Gravy Danger dish sounds tempting. It consists of French fries covered in gluten-free house-made gravy topped with bacon and cheese. Could this be a gluten-free susbtitute for the ever so elusive Poutine that I have only witnessed my friends enjoying?

For dessert, try the gluten-free brownie or the fried plantains with honey or maple syrup, cinnamon, toasted pecans and coconut. Known as Sweet Dreams, this dessert can remain dairy-free by opting for soy or rice ice cream over the traditional cow’s milk version. Same option applies for the ‘milk’shakes.

Certain food and ingredient concerns are addressed in the following list, but if you have further questions be sure to ask! The staff is willing to check labels for you!

If you visit in warmer weather, consider sitting out back on the seasonal patio!

Closed Mondays

Another great find in Portland, Maine! This time it’s not only a place to grab a bite to eat but also a spot to take the kids for an afternoon of fun! Areas for climbing, painting, legos, trains and even a a stage are just a few of the things to keep kids occupied. The reason I’m reviewing the GreenLight Cafe is for their extensive healthy menu which, of course, includes gluten-free items!

Delicious muffins, breads and other sweets are provided from a local dedicated gluten-free bakery. Some of these are also dairy-free (call to inquire as items vary). The bread can be used for the panini’s and naturally gluten-free organic salads and fruit smoothies are also on the menu. You don’t have to have children to enjoy in this healthy cuisine- all are welcome!

Classes for adults and children are available. Some of these include yoga, sign language and dance classes.

Stop by for an organic coffee and bring your computer- they have WiFi!

AJ’s Wood Grill Pizza in Kittery, Maine has finally opened and we are hearing great things about them! They offer gluten-free wraps and pizza on their menu .

There are many specialty pizzas from which to choose or you can build your own. Toppings are available on a traditional tomato based ‘red’ layer or you can choose the ‘white’ pizza which is a pesto based layer with parsely oil. Local ingredients are sourced whenever possible which, I would assume, make for a terrific Wood Grilled Ratatouille Pizza. This vegetarian pizza consists of zucchini, red pepper, red onion, feta and eggplant. If you’re a meat eater, I’d suggest the House-made Sausage Pizza which comes with sweet or spicy sausage and peppers and onions.

Like the pizza, the sandwiches are also offered in delicious specialty combinations yet there is always the choice to build your own as well. These are available in a gluten-free wrap.

For dessert there are gluten-free brownies and cookies. I’ll definitely be stopping by on my next Kittery shopping spree. If you make it there before me, let me know how it is!

Delivery available.
