About Us
Dining away from home can be a challenge for those managing food allergies and intolerances or special dietary needs. As a registered dietitian, as well as a mother of children with food allergies, I am always on the lookout for a safe place to eat. This site came about due to the necessity of finding restaurants receptive to serving customers with food allergies and special dietary concerns. Our goal is to increase the awareness within the restaurant community so that we may once again experience the freedom to dine away from home.

The Great Escape in Salem, Ma~CLOSED

I hope everybody gets the opportunity to dine at The Great Escape in Salem, Ma.  This building formerly functioned as a jail from 1813 until it closed it’s doors in 1991 only to reopen just a few years ago as a fantastic jail themed restaurant!  And since all dishes are made to order,  they are great at accommodating special dietary requests!  The menu offers many naturally gluten-free choices,

but we were told that modifications could also be made for most of the dishes.  In place of pasta, one can substitute roasted potatoes or risotto, and cornstarch can be used in place of flour during the preparation of the dish (or omit it altogether).

Many of the dishes are cleverly named.  Some include the Al Capone, Scarface, Handcuffs, CIA and KGB,  Sinatra and the Mafioso.  We tried the Al Pacino which was a delicious dish of pan seared jumbo scallops served over a baby spinach, parmesan cheese and  Dijon mustard risotto.  The other dish we chose was the Lemon Chicken which was part of the Prix Fixe Menu that is offered Sunday through Thursday. This entree came with a Caesar Salad (no croutons), and a dessert of Creme Brûlée.  It did not disappoint in either taste or price!

Prix Fixe Menu $25.95

Appetizer:

Soup of the day (ask your server)

Caesar Salad~Romaine lettuce, parmesan cheese, homemade Caesar dressing

Entree:

Scarface~Shrimp, tomatoes, garlic white wine sauce, substitute linguini with roasted potatoes or risotto

Lemon Chicken~Grilled chicken, artichokes, mushrooms, lemon white wine sauce and roasted potatoes

Steak Tips~Marinated beef tips, roasted potatoes, seasonal vegetables

Dessert:

Gelato or Crème Brûlée

Daily specials are offered too (gluten-free). For example, the homemade herb marinated roasted chicken wings and sautéed mussels & clams in a cherry tomato white wine sauce were featured recently, but the most consistent daily special appears to be the plethora of risotto recipes! Some include; Chicken & Spinach risotto, Grilled Swordfish Risotto, Pan Seared Salmon over Tomato & Arugula Risotto, Chicken & Mushroom Lemon Risotto, Saffron Scallop Risotto with Spinach, Sausage Tomato Risotto with Summer Squash & Zucchini, Chicken Eggplant & Spinach Risotto…and there are many more! Call ahead to see what they’re offering on your visit.

For dessert, there is usually gluten-free choices of Chocolate Mousse, Creme Brûlée and some type of sorbet or gelato. On our visit an Exotix Bomba was available. This was a mix of passion fruit & mango gelato wrapped in a white chocolate shell.

While the interior is quite an experience, the outdoor dining area is also worth your consideration. It’s where the inmates spent their “rec time” and a very pleasant spot nowadays during the warmer months.
